Review
"Palanisamy, a Harvard-trained physician who uses holistic methods, bases this fitness guide on the tenets of the popular paleo diet (fruits, vegetables, lean meats, healthy fats, etc.) but also incorporates the ancient Indian system of ayurveda. Presenting ayurveda as a framework for customizing the paleo diet to individual body types, he includes a quiz to help readers determine whether they need vata (movement energy), pitta (metabolic energy), or kapha (strength-providing force). The author shares his own struggles as a former vegetarian who experienced dramatic improvements with his numerous health issues when he began consuming broth, meats, and eggs. Palanisamy covers familiar topics such as carbs, gluten, fats, and protein, but takes his text into less traveled territory with a chapter on 12 spices he identifies as having particularly powerful healing qualities. Noting that paleo doesn’t emphasize medicinal spices, Palanisamy offers cooking tips about using spices to enhance health (e.g. adding turmeric to rice and soups), as well as a thorough discussion of gut health (according to ayurveda, all disease originates in the gut), a detox program, and recipes. Palanisamy, a personable and knowledgeable writer, clarifies paleo, demystifies ayurveda, and provides readers with practical methods for customizing the diet to create a compatible body-type fit." —Publisher's Weekly

One of the Best!
By Nathan Daley, MD, MPH
This is an impressive work, and it is far more than a diet book. It is a guide to finding health, your unique path to health, that is much needed in a world full of health misinformation and lifestyle confusion. As an integrative preventive medicine specialist, I tend to be highly critical of health books written for the lay public. The Paleovedic Diet, however, is one I can enthusiastically recommend and I think it deserves special attention.

It is clear that, in assembling this robustly scientific book, Dr. Palanisamy made accuracy and efficacy his top priorities. He has taken an abundance of evidence and insight elucidating highly complex physiological relationships that often confuse even nutrition experts and condensed it into succinct and understandable recommendations. He clears up numerous popular misconceptions about Paleolithic nutrition and he doesn’t hesitate to confront controversy with science. It might be surprising to the reader that actual scientific evidence, much of it reviewed here, exists to guide one in areas dominated by opinion and misinformation such as gluten sensitivity, genetically modified organisms, pesticides, and nutritional and herbal supplements. Dr. Palanisamy is fully honest about where the science is uncertain or absent and offers sincere and helpful advice on how these areas can be best navigated, clearly indicating when this is based on his own experience with patients. I have confidence that this book was motivated by the author’s desire to identify and share certain “truths” about nutrition and health, a journey he began long ago in an effort to recover his own health. I have great respect for this rare kind of authorship born of benevolent intent and curiosity.

The Paleovedic Diet is much more than a diet book, however. Additional critical lifestyle elements such as sleep and chronobiology (circadian rhythms, etc.), stress, and exercise are well covered with equal concern to the scientific evidence. Dr. Palanisamy recognizes that while diet modifications alone are likely to produce a benefit, the simultaneous modification of these synergistic lifestyle variables can produce much more dramatic benefits. Furthermore, he recognizes that different people require different ways to health. These observations are undeniably supported by biomedical science, yet they have been most thoroughly and precisely developed by the science of Ayurveda, making the inclusion of Ayurvedic principles in this book highly relevant and naturally seamless. For readers that might be uneasy about the humoral-like basis of Ayurveda, be reassured that modern science has never contradicted this ancient system. But whereas modern science is profoundly deficient in relating the complex dynamics between health and individual ecology, Ayurveda excels. I anticipate that it may take biomedicine hundreds of years to detail the same relationships that are already eloquently identified by Ayurveda. If you want the benefits now, Ayurveda can guide you.

In summary, The Paleovedic Diet is an enjoyable read which assembles a plethora of relevant modern and ancient scientific insights with impressive scope and integrity, offering the reader a nicely comprehensive approach certain to effectively improve health.

Great nutritional information
By howgal
Overall, give it a read. If you have never read a nutritional book before, this should be your first one. If you have read a lot, you will still learn something. I have read quite a lot of nutritional books over the years and I think this is my favorite. The chapter about super foods, how to buy, store and cook them to get the most of your food is worth the price of the book right there. If you are looking for a lot of recipes with detail and pictures, this isn't the book for you. While there are many great aspects to the nutritional information, there are things I would do differently: I wish the recipes would have had side notes as to the amount of omega 3 to 6 ratio, or the amount of protein, how many calories, what dosha they are good for. To have all the great information given without implementing it into the recipes was disappointing. Plus, going through and looking at the recipes I could see errors - the title of the recipe and the ingredients list didn't match up. I did make the egg muffins. Not very good and they took a lot more time to cook than the recipe indicated. I've grown very fond of Well Fed and NomNom spices in food. I will continue to try different recipes - mostly drawn to those that I have not tried those spice combinations before.

I Saw the Light: The Story of Hank Williams, by Colin Escott, George Merritt, William MacEwen

The book that inspired the major motion picture I Saw the Light. Originally published as Hank William: The Biography.

In his brief life, Hank Williams created one of the defining bodies of American music. Songs such as "Your Cheatin' Heart," "Hey, Good Lookin'," and "Jambalaya" sold millions of records and became the model for virtually all country music that followed. But by the time of his death at age twenty-nine, Williams had drunk and drugged and philandered his way through two messy marriages and out of his headline spot on the Grand Ole Opry. Even though he was country music's top seller, toward the end he was so famously unreliable that he was lucky to get a booking in a beer hall.
Colin Escott's enthralling, definitive biograph--now the basis of the major motion picture I Saw the Light--vividly details the singer's stunning rise and his spectacular decline, revealing much that was previously unknown or hidden about the life of this country music legend.

An excellent biography...
By Jill Meyer
I bought this book after seeing the movie, "I Saw the Light", with Tom Hiddleston as Hank Williams. (The movie has received mixed reviews, but I thought it was quite good.) Colin Escott's biography of Williams - formerly titled "Hank Williams: The Biography" - is one of the best biographies I've read. From the beginning of his life to the end, Hiram "Hank" Williams was a walking country-western song. Beset by alcoholic and pill addictions that may have stemmed from physical pains, Williams flashed onto the musical scene before his life ended in the back seat of a car, while being driven to a concert in Canton, Ohio, a mere 4 years after gaining prominence.

Country music historian Colin Escott seems to understand Hank Williams and his times and his songs and his influence on both those times and those songs. Born in 1923 in a southern Alabama town to a family that seemed to have the vicissitudes of life down pat. The father, Lon, was a drifter, and the mother, Lillie, saw musical promise in her young son. He grew up in small towns, eventually ending up in Montgomery, where he began working with other singers with a purpose of singing at the "Grand Ol' Opry". He wrote songs - never as successful for other singers as they were for himself - and began a rise through the Shreveport, LA radio barn shows. He married a firecracker - Audrey - who battled his mother for managing Hank's career and their marriage was combustible from the start. Depressing drinking and fighting and philandering on both sides of the marriage. Divorce...then musical fame, beginning in 1949. But the good times - and the bad marriage - didn't last through the haze of liquor and prescription pills. Another marriage followed and so did what seemed to be an untimely death...but probably wasn't. The man was just "wore out" in both body and spirit by his 29th year.

Escott's biography is a straight forward one. He's kind and sympathetic to his subject and understands America of the times (though he does refer to a politician as "standing" for office, rather than "running" for office.) and how country music was never as "pure" after Williams' death. Would Hank Williams be as much of a success today? Escott reminds the reader of how "packaged", "molded" and "handled" today's music makers are. Williams doesn't seem to have been the type that took to handling. He was his own man and his music proved his individuality.

Very Well Written, Incredibly Depressing
By Chrystine Collins-Blums
This is a difficult review to write. The book itself is well researched and well written. Hank is an incredible song writer and this biography chronicles his life very well. As someone who has been a long time fan, for at least 40 years, it was depressing. Of course I knew about his drinking, his domineering mother and volatile wife Audrey but I had idea just how deplorable some of his acts were. This family makes the Kardashian clan look like saints. Most of the main characters in his life seem sociopathic. I have of empathy for him, I know he was in a great deal of pain and some of his acts may have been due to the times in which he lived. I honestly think I would have preferred to be left in the dark about how he really lived.

It would be hard to imagine a better rendering of the life of arguably country music's most ...
By Matt R. Lohr
It would be hard to imagine a better rendering of the life of arguably country music's most influential artist than Colin Escott's exhaustive and beautifully written biography of Hank Williams. This book is brilliantly well-researched, moves like a house afire, and gives the reader a compelling perspective on the life, times, and demons of a man who, in the space of only six years, compiled one of the most essential discographies in all of American song. Escott wisely never attempts to definitively pinpoint a cause for Williams' demons; by anatomizing them in detail, the book does enough to illustrate how the artist was ruled and ultimately destroyed by compulsions and sadnesses beyond his control. The book is also a clear-eyed yet never overly nasty depiction of the battles that have been waged in the aftermath of Williams' death over the rights to his catalog and legacy; it's heartbreaking to see how people who were never there enough for Hank when he was alive have become literally invested in his earnings after his death. Nobody comes off as an angel here, and some people are downright hateful in their willingness to turn every last earthly scrap of Hank's life into gold. (Hank Williams Jr. arguably comes off better than anyone else, though it's odd that the book never even mentions Hank 3, who has carved his own unique outlaw-country niche, one that I honestly think Hank himself would approve of.)

This book was the basis for the new biopic starring Tom Hiddleston as Hank. The film smoothly condenses the narrative presented here, even as it somewhat dilutes the raw, often tragic events depicted here. The film is recommended. The book is damn near essential.

Homeland: And Other Stories, by Barbara Kingsolver

With the same wit and sensitivity that have come to characterize her highly praised and beloved novels, Barbara Kingsolver gives us a rich and emotionally resonant collection of twelve stories. Spreading her memorable characters over landscapes ranging from Northern California to the hills of eastern Kentucky and the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, Kingsolver tells stories of hope, momentary joy, and powerful endurance. In every setting, Kingsolver's distinctive voice— at times comic, but often heartrending—rings true as she explores the twin themes of family ties and the life choices one must ultimately make alone.

Homeland and Other Stories creates a world of love and possibility that readers will want to take as their own.

From Publishers Weekly
"With this dazzling array of stories, demonstrating a wide range of characterizations, settings, situations and voices, Kingsolver confirms the promise of her astonishingly accomplished first novel, The Bean Trees ," praised PW . "If the symbolism in a few tales is too obvious, the author handles other narrative devices with delicacy and subtle skill."

From Library Journal
Kingsolver's second book--her novel, The Bean Trees ( LJ 2/1/88), won high praise--consists of uniformly affecting short stories, enhanced by real wisdom and generous warmth. Her characters, mostly mothers and daughters, uncover those memories and truths, once deeply buried, that emerge in moments of sudden crisis. In "Rose-Johnny," a young southern girl clings tightly to the ostracized woman she befriends. In "Blueprints," an unmarried Sacramento woman endures and transforms a long relationship, once happy, that threatens to turn into cabin fever. Kingsolver is not an innovator, but her voice is sure and her narrative skill accomplished. Highly recommended.

Rose-Johnny is the shining star
By Manola Sommerfeld
Rose-Johnny is the shining star in this awesome collection of short stories. It deals with many different small-town prejudices, and the outrage at the 11 year-old level that little Georgeann feels. My favorite story, from a humor standpoint, is Blueprints. Although it is not a funny story per se, the comments and thoughts that Lydia makes about Whitman's friends are hilarious. These friends are so concerned about Mother Nature and the environment, but haven't bothered to visit them once they moved out of the evil city into the foothills. These same friends insist that fertilized eggs are better for you than unfertilized eggs (show me the scientific evidence), and name their children after vegetables. I am sure these guys look at you wrong if you don't buy organic coffee beans from Guatemala. I think Barbara Kingsolver has little tolerance for those nature-type-wanna-be's (here, here).
All these and the rest of the stories are beautifully crafted, with many reflections on nature. Wonderful book, not to be missed.

Her novels are brilliant, her short stories aren't quite... I still always recommend her!
By R. Peterson
Kingsolver, who has never written anything that hasn't awed me, manages to capture much of the very essence of the human existence in our culturally and socially backward world (and country). These stories, however, are not nearly as powerful and earth-moving for me as her novels (Prodigal Summer, Poisonwood Bible, Pigs in Heaven, etc..)

This is a collection of short stories that each deal with the frustrations that average people face in their desire to lead normal, quiet, decent lives. Frequently her personages are `different' in some way and their frustrations are compounded in economic, social, cultural and sometimes just personal ways. And the power of persistence, love, and respect is frequently what combats those frustrations. None of these stories are loud and angry, none are suspenseful or thrilling, but each is softly, powerfully moving and thought provoking.

I respond to Kingsolver because she presents her characters in ways that pull in the reader, leaving the reader as an ally, quietly rooting for the protagonist. I always recommend Kingsolver to other readers because she can enlighten you without you even knowing it!

At Home with Kingsolver
By Daniel Olivas
"Homeland and Other Stories" showcases Barbara Kingsolver's remarkable ear for heartland speech as well as her talent for painting the every day struggles of people through exquisite but understated detail. Kingsolver never falls into melodrama nor does she show disrespect for her characters. This is a beautiful and powerful collection.
