Clears up a lot of misinformation you learned in dive class.

My experience is that dive instructors, dive guides, dive shop owners, and all of the other dive professionals you trust your health to to some degree or another are generally clueless about the actual medical aspects of diving and dive medicine. Generally they have formed opinions which often are based on erronous data and frequently contradict one another. The only way to really understand the effects of diving on your body is from the writings of an expert with sufficient quantities of research behind him. There may be other books that do this, but this is the only one I've found so far. If you don't already own a good dive medicine guide, I would like to recommend this one to you. It is not for doctors or paramedics, it is for divers who want to know what is really going on inside their bodies and the proper response for when something goes wrong. Ever diver should have some good medical reference and should have all of the significant parts memorized, because if you cannot depend on yourself in a medical dive emergency, those jokers running the boat will kill you for sure.

Scuba Diving - Part 2 - After Open Water

This is an excellant and informative book for those who have completed their open water certification, or otherwise understand the basics of SCUBA diving, and quest for additional information on health and SCUBA diving. In here you find the answers to many issues chatted about on boats and in front of dive shops, and for which most beginning divers usually get the incorrect information. It is not for the uncertified masses as it assumes a basic understanding of open water SCUBA and it is not for those experienced divers who have kept current via magazines and speciality courses, as most of the information within has been available in magazines such as DAN's Alert Diver and UnderCurrent. Well, maybe even experinced divers who want single source for all that information rather than a file folder of old articles.

Ignorance can kill

While sitting on a dive boat in Turkey on the last day of my PADI Open Water Course, I was disturbed by several stories of experienced divers being "bent", "narked" and "dying" well within the recreational diving limits, many within 30 metres and often breathing air as opposed to "mixes". When I returned to Ireland I decided I needed to find out more about why such incidents occured (because I don't want to be a statistic!). I came across the online version of Lawrence Martin's book, and read it from cover to cover. And boy where my eyes opened! To put is simply, anyone who dives without really understanding the effects of breathing gases under pressure, may as well put on a blindfold and swim with the sharks. Lawrence's book is well written and easy to understand, and quite frankly, could save your life someday (probably, I joke not). Ignorance can kill, and I really do not want to place my life in the hands of an instructor or buddy ever again. This book is a MUST for every diver, particularily recreational divers. Ignore it at your peril!!

This second edition incorporates much of the feedback received from instructors and students who used the first edition of the book. Second, solution steps have been added to the Example Problems, highlighting the general solution procedure. Third, the material on mechanism force analysis has been greatly expanded. These and many other modifications were made to more effectively promote the understanding of mechanism analysis.

It is expected that students using this book will have a good background in technical drawing, college algebra, and trigonometry. Also, knowledge of vectors, mechanics, and computer application software, such as spreadsheets, will be useful. However, these concepts are also introduced in the book.

The approach of applying theoretical developments to practical problems is consistent with the philosophy of engineering technology programs. This book is primarily oriented toward mechanical- and manufacturing-related engineering technology programs. It can be used in either associate or baccalaureate degree programs.

    Solid textbook

    Required text for the course I took, way cheaper than the school bookstore. Sometimes, I thought things weren't explained well, and some of the questions at the end of the chapter used situations that were not addressed in the text. Even the instructor agreed with that. Also, the text deals with the theoretical aspect of some of the items, where our instructor was a retired engineer, and taught to the use of the subject matter in the real world. Overall though, the book was adequate

    Great Machine Design Textbook

    This book is pretty easy to understand, but it's short on images. I had to read a lot of text to understand the concepts. It is very clear in its descriptions; however. It's fairly easy to navigate around this book. It's created for people who are studying Machine Design. It's a textbook, so nothing like a plot.

    DO NOT BY THIS BOOK!!

    It appears this book was edited very poorly from the third edition to the fourth edition. For example we would be assigned homework problems at the end of each chapter the answers to the odd problems are in the back of the book but most of the answers are from the third edition text there were very few answers in the back of the book that were correct we know because our instructor had both editions of the book. There are numerous typos through out the book incorrect units bad equations the whole chapter on cams is useless none of the cam displacement equations work we had to use another reference when we got to the cam section. About the only thing in this book that was accurate was the graphical portions of each chapter that was it. I do not recommend this book if you need to learn anything about kinematics evaluated analytically.

    Marieke de Mooij, Ph.D. (Netherlands), is a consultant in cross-cultural communications, as well as a retired profesora associada of international advertising at the University of Navarra in Spain and visiting professor at several universities across the world. She is the author of several academic publications on the influence of culture on marketing and advertising. She has also authored books on culture and consumer behavior as well as culture and communication theory worldwide.

    A unique perspective on consumer behaviour

    The book is unique in that Marieke K Mooij uses theories from cultural anthroplogy and interpersonal communication to present a framework for consumer behaviour. It is particularly useful for practioners who are working in underresearched markets and are looking for ways to explain why consumers behave the way they do. The book makes extensive use of Hofstede's 5-D model to locate members of different cultures along the dimensions of culture and then uses this to explain differences in buying behaviour, communication styles and advertising appeals. The conclusion of the book is that individual behaviour is shaped more by the culture they belong to than it is by income or other differentiators. The one limitation of the book is that most of the examples are European, but I would recommend it even for those interested in Asian markets

    This book review is on a 'titre personnel" basis.
    I enjoyed the international advertising course which Marieke gave at Universidad de Navarra in 1997. As a teacher she is very capable of communicating the importance and urgency of this diverse and complex subject: managing marketing communications and brands within the outer/ and inner spheres of market cultures. Marieke applies the 5 dimensional model of G.Hofstede to illustrate and diferentiate a clear and full colour image of cultures and values. Being dutch myself, I recognise both the theory of Hofstede, but also the paradoxes Marieke has found. Intrigueing phenomena such as Japanese business success and collectivism, such as status and success in feminine cultures etc etc are often raising eyebrows, and not seldomly at highbrow corporate levels.
    Cultural understanding, I have learnt, is possible only after understanding one's own culture, and a commitment to learn about the other culture, not matching it with your own. Marieke does this very well, she places anecdotes and case-studies is an objective setting, viewing it with an uncoloured microscope. She has added theory, academic research and good practice to make this book complete.
    This book, for me, is one of the few great books on international (intercultural) marketing communications (and brand management).

    The book itself is fine. The problem I'm facing is navigating through the pages, especially skipping to different chapters. MOST of the time, the book freezes, does not respond, and I am forced to close out and reopen it. Once reopened, it takes three to four tries to go to the chapter that I wish to read. When I access this on my laptop, it's a little easier to navigate, but it's still a bit annoying to not be able to scroll normally, only page by page, and it's slow loading.
    In normal books, this usually isn't a problem because you read it all the way through once. For a college textbook, since flipping back and forth throughout the book is crucial, it becomes a problem. I am studying online at a university in the US from Brazil in order to be with my father through some difficult times this semester. This means the eTextbook is my lifeline. I don't have access to physical books, and I don't have other students who could help me the way they could in a traditional classroom setting. So far, I have been able to get by studying for the exams, but the added pressure of not knowing if my book will open doesn't help!
    Compared to the other eTextbook I have on Chegg, this is not a good layout.

    Goes where few texts dare to go: the real-world

    I recommend this to managers as much as students.
    Sure, the price seems like a lot of cash to shell out at first. But trust me, it is worth it. I had to read it for a Management class, and it started of like a typical OB text, illustrating the history of management studies (Taylor to Maslow to Mayo to Likert to ...). Good stuff, but pretty dull. Then, Hersey et al went where most scholars, even the supposedly worldly MBA types, fear to tread: real-world application!
    The text covers all of the material covered Blanchard's "One Minute Manager," "Putting the One Minute Manager to Work," and a shelf load of other books. It also does a great job introducing Blanchard and Hersey's Situational Leadership, where the manager matches leadership behavior to a report's ability level and motivation. This replaces "Leadership and the One Minute Manager," and delves much deeper into the topic.
    Hersey et al also cover:
    - Behavioral shaping, and positive and negative reinforcement quite nicely
    - Communications skills necessary to lead reports
    - Power building, and using effective power bases ...
    - The list literally goes on and on.
    I use the concepts I was first exposed to here day in and day out. They work. My OB professor told us that, if he would be limited to just one book on management, he would choose this one. And, five years later, I agree. I am very glad that I did not sell this book back to the campus bookstore. I consult the book at least once a week while pondering both thorny and maundane problems with my employees.

    Organized!

    I was first introduced to Situational Leadership in the military quite a few years ago. This book did a great job of dusting off the cobwebs in the memory and proving that Situational Leadership is still a viable means of leading your people.
    The book provides an overview of various management and human behavior theories, such as Maslow, Herzberg, Schein, Argyris, and McGregor. Then, fits them into a nice model deemed Situational Leadership. I must say that I've read the majority of the theories already and they do fit. Plus, if followed, the model is very effective in helping a leader in real world situations.
    If you buy this book, you receive a host of valuable information. I think, besides involving you with the Situational Leadership model, the best attributes are the extensive lists of additional reading that are provided to you at the end of each chapter, and at the end of the book. If you're on a journey to better yourself as a manager and leader, the exhaustive list is well worth the price of the book. It saves you from buying the duds and "fadish" management/leadership books on-line without the ability to have them in your hands prior to purchase. Plus, the book gives you a good preview to the information contained in a book before you buy it.
    All in all, if you're going to invest some time and money in a management/leadership book, definitely buy this book. You need to know this information and have it at your fingertips if you're going to survive in the organizational human behavior world as a leader.

    This book is one of my favorites! It leads you first through a complete review of management and leadership theories, then introduces the authors' famous SITUATIONAL LEADERSHIP model and theory. This book goes into great depth about the sit-lead model and theory, and is a great read. Want to be a better leader??? Read the book by the experts! ...
