The autobiography of America's favorite Mouseketeer holds few surprises but is a charming read. Funicello describes herself as an atypical celebrity: shy, unassuming and more interested in marrying and raising a family than in mixing with the Hollywood "glitterati." She was discovered by Walt Disney at a dance recital and was catapulted to fame as the most popular Mouseketeer on Disney's The Mickey Mouse Club . When the TV show was canceled in 1959, she embarked on a career in music and film, producing such hit singles as "Tall Paul," starring in a slew of '60s movies like Beach Blanket Bingo and becoming an icon of wholesome young womanhood. The book, written with freelancer Romanowski, is sprinkled with affectionate tributes to such friends and colleagues as Frankie Avalon, Paul Anka, Fabian Forte and Walt Disney himself. Unabashedly adhering to the "traditional family values" that governed American culture in the '50s, Funicello asserts she had no qualms about giving up fame and fortune to marry and become a mom. But in 1987 she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and the latter part of the book is a moving account of her attempt to come to terms with the debilitating disease. Photos not seen by PW . Anyone looking for the definition of wholesome can find it in this celebrity bio, which has no ego, no kiss-and-tell, no backstabbing, and not one truly unkind word. Funicello is either everything that she has always been touted to be or manages to completely maintain the facade; nothing here will tarnish her image. She modestly denies understanding why she was singled out and gives glowing reports of "Mr. Disney," the working conditions at the studio, and her rapport with fellow cast members. She describes an idyllic family life and is even able to present her biggest trials-a divorce and her current battle with multiple sclerosis-by unfailingly looking on the bright side. For general collections that can use a heartwarming addition.

Reader beware: Annette Funicello's autobiography is so sugary your teeth will hurt after reading it. It's safe to say that if Funicello hadn't disclosed her battle with multiple sclerosis last year, there would probably be no book, since her career effectively ended in the early 1970s. Her health problems are the most affecting part of the account, especially in contrast to descriptions of the cotton-wrapped life she led before the disease struck. A squeaky-clean teen idol, protected by the Disney Studio, an ideal daughter, living at home until she married, a woman whose highest calling was motherhood--Annette personifies another era. The 1950s did exist in real life like they did on TV, and Annette is proof of it. Sometimes, however, her na{‹}ivet{‚}e is a bit hard to swallow, especially when it comes to her near adoration of Walt Disney, the man who discovered her. Throughout, in the drippiest fashion possible, she praises her mentor. Annette must not have read the recent bios that paint Walt as a fascist-leaning, alcoholic anti-Semite. This opus has all the substance of an overlong People magazine article, but that's not to say plenty of boomers, the intended audience, won't get a kick out of flashing back to such Mousketeer memories as Spin and Marty and Anything Can Happen Day--and, of course, the way Annette filled out her sweater. An Enjoyable Warm-Hearted Account of a Warm-Hearted Person

Obviously, I would not have sought out this book to read if there had not been something about Annette Funicello I had already found very much appealling. And I mean beyond her obvious good-looks and incredible smile. And reading it confirms what I always believed in my heart -and what I wanted to believe- to be true about Annette: she is an absolute sincere and caring person. Okay, if not for Annette's eventual battle with MS, the book doesn't contain any real human drama beyond what most of us might say we experience in our everyday lives (and she acknowledges that!!). And her's is a wonderful life. Annette is absolutely convincing that what she sees through her eyes and the emotions she feels throughout the events of her life are absolutely sincere. Call it sugar-coating if you want. I believe she is absolutely real. Annette always looks to see the best in people. And therefore, it just is not in her heart to pass judgement on people and tear them down - even when sometimes, she gets hurt. Imagine that. And she never "sold out" on her principles for more money or selfish career advancement. In fact, she really was ready to walk away from it completely for the sake of her children and a little privacy. So if you want dirt and drama, go somewhere else. MS or no MS, this book is sweet. But that's Annette. So it should be. And we can all stand to learn something from her, in one aspect or another ...Or just enjoy her taking us on a trip back to an America, as she so describes "has sadly passed into history."

Fresh, lively writing and colorful anecdotes

Surprisingly absorbing and lively recollections from Annette Funicello, one-time Mouseketeer and Disney darling who was the only teen-mouse to graduate to the big screen via "Babes In Toyland" and the "Beach Party" and "Merlin Jones" comedies. Annette comes clean about being the only Mouseketeer kept on contract by Walt Disney after MMC ran its course, and she contemplates why that was and how her co-stars struggled without Disney's guidance. She is very upfront, but also a little indifferent to her own good fortune, embarrassed and innately shy about a career that just fell into her lap. She says she never aspired to fame, but got it regardless. The book continues its interesting narrative even after Annette marries and retires, cleaning the house the day she heard Walt Disney passed, and eventually realizing her marriage was out of gas. Fate dealt Annette (and all her fans) a bitter hand when she was diagnosed with MS, which she still continues to fight, but her inspiring conclusion to the book gives all of us hope.

Wonderful Story

I have the audio cassette of A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes, and it is beautiful. I've listened to it several times in my car. I don't tire of it because it is a human story. Annette Funicello suceeded on her own -- her father was an auto mechanic and her mother stayed at home. This is an inspiration to children and even adults.

These issues as well as the works of seven British children's authors who published from 1850 to 1870, including Lewis Carroll and Christina Rossetti, are treated here by Knoepflmacher (English and ancient and modern literature, Princeton Univ.; Forbidden Journeys: Fairy Tales and Fantasies by Victorian Women Writers, LJ 4/15/92). The author believes that male writers of the time idealized childhood, whereas female writers were more grounded in actuality and that both camps were in constant conflict. Behind the innocent face of Victorian fairy tales such as Through the Looking Glass or Mopsa the Fairy lurks the spectre of an intense nineteenth-century debate about the very nature -- and ownership -- of childhood. In the engagingly written Ventures into Childland, U. C. Knoepflmacher illuminates this debate. Offering brilliant rereadings of classics from the "Golden Age of Children's Literature" as well as literature commonly considered "grown-up", Knoepflmacher probes deeply into the relations between adults and children, adults and their own childhood selves, and between the lives of beloved Victorian authors and their "children's tales".

As Knoepflmacher shows, male and female constructions of childhood in these fairy tales differed radically. Male writers -- John Ruskin, William Makepeace Thackeray, George MacDonald, and Lewis Carroll -- often displayed an uneasy relation to adult gender roles. By privileging a special girl reader, they attempted to blur sexual differences and sentimentalize and arrested childhood. Female authors, on the other hand -- Jean Ingelow, Christina Rossetti, and Juliana Ewing -- tried to wrest fairy tales away from the male authors who had appropriated the genre. These women's tales relate fables of growth that are more grounded in actuality than the men's, and that more often allow their girl characters to mature.

Great book to use to start teaching subtext

This is an ideal book to use to introduce older elementary students to the more sophisticated notion of subtext. My 11-year-old said, "Mom, I want to read better books," like her older siblings were doing. I said, "First you have to learn to read books better." And I handed her this one. I've used this with my oldest four (we homeschool) and it really, really makes them rethink reading.

I want to say ahead of time that I completely disagree with all the other reviews I've read about why this is a great book. It is a truly fine book, but not, in my opinion, for the reasons so frequently listed. If you are looking for escapist animal adventure and fantasy, go elsewhere. If you want an intense study of supremacist thinking, this is your book.

I have my 11 year olds read the book and come back with a summary, we chat, and basically all my kids had the same reaction as most kids: good story, great read, action, adventure, brave mouse, inventive heroic rats, etc.

I then start to ask questions. "How long did it take for the rats to move Timothy's house?" 1/2 an hour. "Was it hard for them?" No. "Why was Timothy sick?" General sickliness and dampness in the old location. "Who was Timothy's father?" Jonathan, the NIMH mouse. "Friend of the rats?" Of course. "Then why didn't they take care of Jonathan's family after he died?" Silence. "Let's retrack... How did Jonathan die?" Helping the rats. "Did they make sure at least that his widow and children had a warm, secure place to live?" No. "Did they check in on her from time to time?" No. "Did they make sure she had enough to feed her children?" No. "Did they take on the education of her children knowing she was unable to?" No. "Did they ever offer anything at any time?" No. "So a friend dies helping you and though you have abundant resources and it would not be inconvenient in the least, you do absolutely nothing?" Silence. "Let's look more closely at these rats..."

And we begin to read the book together and read how they respond, how they never offer to help anyone no matter how simple it would be or how important it would be for the other animal, how they hoard their resources and their knowledge, how their 'friendships' are based on how useful or beneficial the other animal is to them, how they see nothing wrong with any of that. How cold their feelings are towards others (at one point they watch mice, being blown away, trying desperately to grip smooth metal with their tiny nails, tumbling by to their deaths, "like leaves" and only one rat helps one mouse, a favor the mouse repays over and over and over again when in fact it was very little effort or danger for the rat to help him).

We begin to talk about their morality. Much is made by the rats that they don't want to live by stealing anymore. Rats are scavengers, not thieves. When these rats are first picked up, they were living off the refuse of the market, they are not thieves. It is not until after they have been genetically altered that they actually refuse to eat garbage and break into grocery stores and begin actually stealing. They do a lot of hand-wringing about how can they live without being thieves. The same way all the other animals on the farm do it: by foraging! But that is never an option to them. No, they must create their own farming community. But how... Oh, by STEALING everything they need to do it. And not once is it even considered that they could do much good around the farmer's house by repairing his equipment or otherwise blessing this family that they are so busy stealing from. What a different book it would be if the farmer were to be overheard saying to his wife, "I thought I would have to pay $2000 to get the tractor fixed, but I went out there this morning and it turned over and ran like it was brand new. I can't explain it. More than makes up for the $200 in seed that we lost last year." But they never, not once, offer to do anything for anyone whom they are stealing from, regardless of how much they are stealing or how easy it would be to do.

Their moral compass is also shown to be in a spiral when they come across a dead old man in a forest who has left a truck full of tools that are the perfect size for rats (he repaired toys). Who does the truck belong to? The heirs, says the leader. But we don't know who they are or how to get in touch with them, say the rats. Okay, then I guess it's ours if we want it, replies the leader. And they proceed to strip the truck. I then ask my 11 year old, "If you were to come across something that belonged to someone else, not a small thing that could be seen as lost or discarded but something big (like a vehicle full of equipment!) but you had no way to get in touch with who owned it, what would you do?" "Leave it alone." "Right. Would you assume that that gave you the right to take anything you wanted?" "No!" Right...

And the kids start to think, start to notice, start to reread sections. "Mom! Like here!" and "I never noticed this, but look!" And what they eventually start to see is that nowhere in the novel does the idea of helpful, inventive, heroic rats who aid a poor little mommy mouse even exist! The summary on the back of the book is a sham. The glowing reviews are shams. These rats are supremacists.

And the older the kids get the more they begin to realize that these are fascists. Only we matter, and we matter because we are the strongest, the most intellectually superior, and therefore all of our actions are justified. We are not responsible for weaker neighbors. If they can not survive, that is no concern of ours. We guard what is ours jealously. You are only welcome if you serve a purpose, and only as long as you serve that purpose. We owe you nothing. And you must take all the risk (that was a moment of revelation to one of my kids -- the rats used the mice to take all the risk!) before we will deign to even notice you. We will create a new society, one without any weakness, one without difference, one without you, only us.

Even at the end of the book, when the rats and the brave mouse mommy (she is that!) have been through the roughest of rough times together, do they invite her to join them? Let her family know where they are going? Say they'll come back and visit? No. They are off to build their utopia.

There is only one rat who shows some compassion, some genuine sense of friendship, and even he does some incredibly cold and calculated things.

So I give this book 5 stars and I challenge anyone to reread this after reading this and not see something new, something very quiet, but very loud. Ah, subtext...

We have to read books better. It is my job as a homeschooling mom to teach my kids how to do that. This is an absolutely wonderful book for that. Thank you, Robert O'Brien.

P.S. If you really want to see the truth of it, read the sequel, Racso and the Rats of NIMH written by his daughter. She completely ignores the original undertones and just goes with the surface stuff and writes her book as though these rats were always friendly and helpful and compassionate. The rats are almost unrecognizable...

the book is a childhood favorite, better than the movie, and even romanticize reading. without spoiling it, the book has a major turning point when the heros of the story laern how to read and become a powerful force. the rats of nimh are examples of team work, history, and heroism. this children book will excite the minds of all young readers and create a healthy imagination.

One of my all-time favorite chapter books. My dad read it to me when I was a kid and I just finished reading it to my son. It was a whole other experience reading it as an adult. So many different layers.

A few errors, but in contrast the wonderful content - minuscule.

I really enjoyed this book. I've torn away from Wicca a long time ago, but I was in a dark tunnel, tumbling across random books then reading them. This book is immensely encouraging, and I recommend it to everyone.

Issues:
Lack of info on modern theistic Lucifereanism.
Actually no mention of it at all.
Barely any mention of any theistic "satanism".
No mention of other forms of Satanism besides LaVey satanism.

Just a nit-pick, but wrongly sourced one book.
A little in the dark about a couple other things.
Typos, but it's rare.

Loves:
I love how the author so willingly explained common misconceptions and exposed the perversion of important esoteric beliefs.
I love how the author exposed true Wicca
I love how the author gave me other books to help me spring into the occult correctly.
I love this whole idea of this book. It's extremely important. All too often people like me delve into the occult, yet we are still in the dark and run risk of running into wrong situations. I enjoyed now this in no way tried to make me afraid.
I love how the author was well-read on many things.
I also enjoyed how the author kindly informed possibly naive people from entering a dangerous situation. That ran a little long, but too often people go into a ill-intentioned situation with good intentions. I think the coming out of the broom closet section was a little long, but it reminded me that people can be dangerous out of fear.
I wish the author would have gone into a few things a little more.
I couldn't find anymore books by this author, and I'd love to read more.
This is sort of a guide. And it's great. It pretty much handed me the flashlight I direly needed while I wandered through the dark tunnel of occult information.
I loved this book so much I am going to re-read it and set a plan for my studies.
I would really enjoy this author writing a book on starting meditation and actually practicing the occult.
The simple and kind writing style really encouraged me.

Ok but has its issues

For the most part I enjoyed this book, it was an easy read, and I feel that it at least gave people a good look at non Wiccan spirituality. It does have a few issues though and a couple little nit picks however. This is why I rated it at three rather then a four. My biggest issue is that the first 6 chapters are all about wicca. In a book that is trying to teach people about non-Wiccan spiritual paths I would think that Wicca would only be mentioned here and there, not have the first 6 chapters devoted to it. Its not a big issue but I just felt it was odd. Other then that it has a few grammatical errors and such, but over all is done well. The other issue I had was that very little is mentioned about Satanism, so if you're a satanist, like myself don't expect a whole lot of information on it. The only mention of Satanism is of course LaVayen.

There is some good information in it

It's an alright book. There is some good information in it, and then there is some bad information. For example, the authors irresponsible label of Huna as traditional Hawaiian when in fact it is not Hawaiian or traditional to the Hawaiian people at all. Huna was created by a professor who is not from Hawaii and brought in New Age practice into his interpretations of some old ideas. Take this book, like any on the Occult, with a grain of salt and research rather than accept everything as fact.

While it's true that no one person's vision encompassed all of what we now consider personal computing, we can't help but focus on individual effort as we try to understand how we got here. Science writer M. Mitchell Waldrop carefully balances this hero culture with a historian's mania for completeness in The Dream Machine: J.C.R. Licklider and the Revolution That Made Computing Personal.

"Lick," as his students and colleagues called him, was deeply involved in guiding the evolution of personal and networked computing from the 1950s through the 1980s, after leaving a career in cognitive psychology. Waldrop captures his spirit vividly--contrary to our stereotypical view of computer scientists, Licklider was profoundly interested in his fellow humans, and this interest helped him lead the design of technology adapted to human needs.

Waldrop interviewed dozens of contemporaries and examined reams of notes and primary sources to compose this massive biography of influence that stretches from MIT to the Pentagon to Xerox PARC and far beyond. If it sometimes seems that Licklider was a little too well beloved, especially in comparison to some of the more colorful figures in computing's recent history, it is worth remembering that his patience and humility were the very qualities that helped deliver the home-computing revolution we take for granted today. Licklider was a brilliant scientist whose essential contributions to cognitive psychology and cybernetics included critical early developments in the field of man-machine interaction. However, his original work is often overshadowed by his accomplishments as a teacher, administrator and project leader and this ably written and well-researched biography isn't likely to propel him into the limelight. Waldrop (Man-Made Minds) devotes about 20% of the book to Licklider himself; the rest covers his teachers, colleagues and students at MIT and the Pentagon including computing pioneers Douglas Engelbart, Wes Clark and Larry Roberts and Licklider's indirect influence on the development of personal computers and the Internet (via "the world's first large-scale experiment in personal computing" at MIT). To his credit, Waldrop avoids common stereotypes of computer nerds or saints, delivering a vivid account of Licklider and his contemporaries. But he was not able to interview Licklider (who died in 1990), nor does he include material from personal papers or memoirs. Instead, Waldrop bases most of the book on secondary accounts, including biographies and histories of technology. The result is an informative and engaging history of computers from the 1930s to the 1970s, with an emphasis on Licklider and his period of greatest influence, 1957 to 1968. Licklider, known to many simply as "Lick," was a revolutionary thinker for his time. During the early 1960s, he viewed the computer as a tool of communication and focused his attention on networking them for accessing information and resource sharing. Waldrop, a former writer for Science magazine and author of Complexity, paints a comprehensive portrait of his subject, describing how his dream of a "human-computer symbiosis" would change the course of history and culture. Lick's work as the director of the Advance Research Projects Agency (ARPA) for the Department of Defense led him to envision "a user at a remote terminal, having access to a variety of resources at several interconnected computer centers." While heading ARPA, he developed time-sharing the interactive use of computers by several people at the same time and paved the way for the creation of the Internet. A newfound respect for how computing and the internet developed

Because of this book, I have a completely newfound respect for the people that developed the internet and computing as we know it. I always viewed pre-21st century computing as a somewhat dull affair, but this book has forced me to view things differently. Ostensibly about Licklider, it's really a book about the history of computers from 1944-1980, and it covers Arpanet, Xerox PARC, DEC, university research labs, and the folks that moved between these organizations and made the world as we know it.

I was a ms reviewer of this complete, but very readable book based on JCR Licklider's vision of interactive and networked computing. It covers almost 50 years of computing.

Best History of Computer Science

Everyone has heard about the amazing ideas and systems from Xerox PARC, but few realize that this lab was was the culmination of JCR Licklider's vision of personal, interactive computing, not its birthplace. Licklider provided the vision and impetus to form the ARPA-funded core of computer science research, which lead to Douglas Englebart's windows and mice, Xerox PARC's innovations, and the Internet. The next time that you hear someone saying that government can't do anything well, give them a copy of this book.
This book is a fascinating, well-written exposition of Licklider's life and work, and even more interestingly, the birth of computer science in the United States. I've never before seen this story as a continuous whole, as opposed to a collection of independent breakthroughs. It is a fascinating narrative, and this is a great book.

Open Channel Flow for the 90's

The definitive source for open channel flow measurement from the industry leader in environmental sampling and flow metering. The book contains a fundamental description of open channel flow, a discussion of the principal types of flumes and weirs, a primary device selection guide, a discussion of the Manning equation and it's limitations, and (most importantly) discharge tables for almost all types and sizes of primary devices that one might find in the field. Everyone in the water or wastewater industry should have copy for general reference.
