A triumph for DAWNS Digest Publications

This is a well-written portrait of the lives of sex workers and their families caught up in India's infamous and ubiquitous sex trade. Shanoor Seervai, a young Indian writer, definitely has a bright future. Her ability to find and describe determination and triumph in a backdrop of hopelessness and despair is uplifting. This is a very compelling humanitarian story. I eagerly anticipate more works coming from the new powerhouse publication arm of DAWNS Digest.

We can and need to do better!

Shanoor Seervai has written a book that shares with us a very personal story about her life and the lives of the oppressed women she wants to help.
The writing is powerful because it is thoughtful and authentic. I didn't feel like I was being preached to, sold to or coerced. The women in these stories face enormous challenges and in my mind are heros and champions of the human spirit. They face tremendous adversity and yet they meet the challenges and strive to overcome them for themselves and their children. The stories reveal some hard truths about the human condition and the horrible things we do or let happen to each other but it also shares some truths about our potential to be amazing and do great things. The setting is India but the scope of the lessons and insights for me were much bigger.
We can and have to do a better job caring for, respecting and helping each other!

Really good book. We used it for a semester but ...

Rented it for my ENG1O1 class. Really good book. We used it for a semester but the book actually has good advice on not just passing the class and teaching the lesson but how to improve your own writing, how to develop and come to new understandings! You have a lot of time for checking it out, and was due 2 weeks after classes ended. Fast shipping and hassle free. They even remind you it is due and how to return it.

I think Ballenger needs to go back to school to learn how to write a textbook.

Currently am using this textbook in my English 102 class at Boise State University. It does have some useful information inside, but the organization and presentation of the material makes it almost impossible to clearly understand the material. For instance, he uses a lot of the same text, size, and colors for main headings and the subheadings. He could have varied the sizes and colors of these headings and indented material to help the reader with overall comprehension and understanding of the material. When he was explaining the writing processes of some of these genres, he varies topics and ideas, when he probably should have stuck with one main topic or research question to help the reader see how an idea becomes an essay, which can't be done when you constantly vary topics and ideas between steps of the process. Aside from atrocious organization, the information itself lacked in depth and clarity, and instead filled the pages with fluff that wasn't important in helping the reader understand the material. I have read many of these chapters over-and-over again, made notes, tried to inquire more, but the information still makes very little sense, and I've left this semester felling as though I've learned nothing at all, except that I wasted money on this useless textbook.

So far, good textbook

I've had very few "writing" textbooks in my time, especially at a college level, but I actually quite like this one. I like the approach the author takes to writing in general, and how he sometimes inserts his own experiences as a writer into the text. I havent had a chance to do very much with it so far, as i'm only about a month into my course, but I like the text and would recommend, which is saying a lot because I tend to hate textbooks as a rule. The writing is clear and understandable, and the examples that are chosen so far seem pretty applicable. No definable cons, but I don't absolutely love it, so only 4 stars.

A new era of communities

In this book, Zygmunt Bauman successfully transcends the schematic dichotomy of Communitarianism vs Libertarianism which is still haunting many scholars. He refocuses our understanding of community onto the current social conditions characterized by globalization and localization or in Bauman's words, ghettoization.
Although Bauman borrows researches and theories from others and his own former works to discuss this issue, he shows his originality by linking up the classical debate of community with his analysis of (post)modernity and the current social condition. He convincingly argues that modernization does not only dissolve all kinds of traditional communities, but also attempts to re-integrate all people into a wide variety of rational systems, such as industrial organization, school, urban society, etc.. The experience of modernity is a great transformation as well as a "great engagement". However, the failure of this modernity project leads to further intensification of the dilemma of security and freedom. The contemporary ghettoization, the massive obsession with local communities is a symptom or an aftereffect of this failure.
For Bauman, a "ghetto" is not a "community" at all; instead, it signifies the impossibility of community, i.e. another example of the failure of modernity project. It is evident that his analysis of contemporary community echoes his former discussions on postmodernity.
Bauman, although criticizes severely the notion of "multiculturalism" and communitarianism, he encourages us to have a new reflection upon community and hold the faith in cross-cultural dialogues. Readers might feel disappointed by the lack of a clear solution but Bauman still provides some directions for us to go beyond the current predicament.

AMAZING WRITER! NEED TO KNOW INFO

I sleepily opened this book to just look in it--and then was on page 20 and thoroughly fascinated. Author Freeland makes it easy to understand the frightening forces being used in these technologies and the color photos of the Morgellon's disease passed by these chemtrails make them real. Her footnotes document every statement's source, in many cases from research by our government itself.

I also like that Freeland gives answers on how people can protect themselves from these dangers in our homes and foods. So many experts who reveal dangers don't include a practical remediation approach or the positive elements that Freeland provides her readers.

Although I'm just at the beginning of the book and being a person who has studied the subject of Geoengineering aka Chemtrails, the author is spot on with her research.

I listened to a radio interview with her and the information she presented in the interview and in the book is down right earth shattering.............We need to wake up globally to this invasive activity that is poisoning us physically and electromagnetically.

Nobody has the right to play God with the earth.

AFTER 20+ YEARS - GEOENGINEERING HAS TO STOP!!

Every American who can still think in spite of our present, massive chemical onslaught, must read this book. It is a non-fiction work that takes a vast topic and makes it understandable to the layperson. You will not put it down once you start.

Also, my heartfelt thanks for the dietary suggestions to fight disastrous effects of the Morgellon's micro-electrical mechanical sensors (MEMS) that we all now suffer from. I hope she will write a new book on the interaction between these iron-ingesting man-made nano-particles and the electromagnetic frequencies of the HAARP network, Nexrad, GWEN, and our garden variety cell towers.
