A statics problem folder

This book is fair. Its strengths are the quantitiy of problems presented and the fact that the answers to nearly all the problems are in the back of the book. The diagrams to the problems are also very good. The weaknesses: presentation of the concepts is light. It is difficuly to build an intellectual understanding of the material from the reading. The "whys" are not explained. Methods are presented a la carte. This book desperately needs a solutions manual.

The book as a matter of fact covers all the basic subjects required for a future understanding of strength of materials. The explanations are quite long, and shorter sentences could have made it more attactive as an excellent text book. I do recommend it as a text book for a basic course.

This book is difficult to follow. The explanations and examples are not clear. It is bad enough that the problems are not clear cut. But it is even worse that a solution manual is not offered for this book.

Grade 3-6-Arranged in chapters by continent, these crafts will be useful for geography and cultural reports. The authors use a system of symbols to denote which continent is associated with the activity, the level of difficulty, the basic art technique involved, and how easy or difficult the required materials are to procure. Black-and-white line drawings illustrate the process and/or the finished product for each project. Most of the activities are interesting and directly linked to the cultures they represent. Others, like several for Antarctica, seem more contrived. Building a structure of icing and sugar cubes is sure to be a hit with children, but how illustrative is it of the Antarctic environment? Necessarily, not all countries and cultures are included but many are represented by more than one project. While children can use this book, the descriptions (e.g., "Young children create a miniature woodland scene..."), the pervasive use of symbols or icons, and the terse but accurate directions indicate that this book was designed for adults.

Love those Kohl books.

I enjoy all of MaryAnn F. Kohl's books, and this one is a little different than her others as it has a bit more in the way of finished products, though they are all arrived at by discovering and creating. Still, this book works well for those older kids who want a little more "fact" in their art. My favorite chapter revolves around Asian projects, in particular those from Japan.

perfect for an art class...

I was looking for art projects to complliment a diversity curriculum...while this is perfect for an art class, I am only able to use a few of the projects. Most of the projects are geared for grade schoolers and up (5 years and up).

I am keeping the book to compliment my educational library at home and in the classroom. You might want to check out "Hands around the world" (I rating this one 5 stars!).

Great geography supplemental book

As a homeschooling mom, I took one look at the copy I got from the library and decided I had to have this book in my collection. Its a great resource. Very creative and unique. Saves me from having to hunt up fun hands on activities for the countries we are studying. I am not an artsy craftsy kind of person and usually find that stuff a waste of time. So something must be really good for me to take notice of. I think theres alot of value to this book. Its a resource to supplement what you are teaching.

Humphrey painted his mural four years after the completion of Orozco’s frescoes on the walls of a faculty dining hall or “grill” at the college. Based on a drinking song by Richard Hovey, Dartmouth Class of 1885, it depicts a mythical founding of the college by Eleazar Wheelock. In the first panel, Wheelock, pulling along a five-hundred-gallon barrel of rum, is happily greeted by young American Indian men, whom he introduces to drunken revelry. The encounter, which takes place as the mural circles the grill room, also features many half-naked Indian women, one of whom reads Eleazer’s copy of Gradus ad Parnassum upside down. Fast-forward to the early 1970s and the introduction of the Native American Program and co-education at Dartmouth College: the “Hovey Murals,” as the work was known, became so controversial that they were covered over, and the room itself closed.
This book aims to provide not only the history (and art history) of this mural but also its wider cultural and historical contexts. The existence of both Orozco’s fresco and Humphrey’s mural on a college campus provides a unique juxtaposition of certain extremes of 1930s mural art. As such, their creation represents an important and fascinating historical moment while bringing into sharper focus some of the issues surrounding the politics of art and images. This book is intended as a textbook for those studying these murals and also as a guide to understanding how they fit into a troubling and difficult history of envisioning Native Americans by non-natives in American literature and popular art.

When we think of Gurkhas we think, not only, of brave soldiers fighting for Britain but also of a race of people. However, there is no such thing as a Gurkha in the ethnic sense – the word is, in fact, a corruption of Goorkha, a small town and one-time state in north-west Nepal.
Nepal has always been a religiously and ethnically diverse nation; the Rajputs and Aryans who arrived during the fighting against the Mongols brought Hinduism with them, while the rest of the country – represented by the Magar, Gurung, Limbu and Rai tribes of Mongolian origins – are generally of the Buddhist religion.
Prithvi Narayan Shah’s Able Army
The first soldiers whose ancestors would go on to be known as Gurkha soldiers were from a small but well-instructed and behaved contingent of troops raised by the leader of the Goorkha state, Prithvi Narayan Shah. Shah had watched and learnt from the Europeans who were infiltrating the Indian sub-continent in the first half of the 18th century, realizing that by following their standard of conformity and discipline he could overthrow other Nepalese chiefdoms that were dotted around his state. He and his Goorkha soldiers did just that, and by the time he died in 1775 they had conquered the majority of present-day Nepal.
For the next 30 years Shah’s successors followed in his glory and built up a fearsome state. Even though they were relatively small in comparison to the states that surrounded them, and rather archaic in terms of weaponry, they made up for it tactically and mentally. This meant they continued to make in-roads further and further into Nepal and closer to areas of British-occupied India. The East India Company had arrogantly attempted to get the tribe on side, but the Goorkhas knew that this was for the benefit of the British as opposed to themselves, therefore they refused to bow.

Benita Estevez is a freelance writer who lives on the Sussex coast with her partner and son. After studying English Literature & Media in Falmouth, Cornwall she worked in publishing for 10 years as an editor and production manager before deciding to view the industry from the author’s point of view instead. Through her mixed Spanish and English heritage, and her studies, she has a keen interest in the areas of post colonialism, world history and current affairs. She travels extensively for the sheer pleasure of experiencing somewhere new but also enjoys returning to places that hold the comfort of familiarity. In her spare time she runs marathons and 10kms and balances this out by eating out – enjoying anything from street food in Guatemala to fine dining in London.

Incredible story

I really enjoyed this book about the Gurkhas. I have read a few lines about them in various books, but this is the first time I have ever read a book about them. Of course this book is too short; nevertheless, the book gave a great synopsis of the history of these fighters. To read their individual stories of heroism is incredible. They really believed that honor was more important than life. I will give this book a five and I will read more about the Gurkhas, and more from this author.

W. Mark Saltzman is the Goizueta Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Yale University, and was the founding Chair of the Yale Department of Biomedical Engineering. He has taught numerous courses on topics in biomedical engineering over the last three decades, and has been widely recognised for his excellence in research and teaching. He is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and a Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society. He is also the recipient of the 2014 Mines Medal and has been elected to the Institute of Medicine.

Best Textbook on the Subject

This textbook is, by far, the best short-form textbook on highway engineering and traffic analysis. There are other long-form books that cover more topics and take more time to cover each topic, but this book is superior for its pedagogical intent: a clear presentation of basic principles and a concise reference book.

The authors of the book, especially Mannering and Washburn, are THE top experts in this area, come from the BEST universities in this area, and are also superior educators. This book is the top choice for classroom instruction and is also a must-have desk reference for practicing transportation engineers.

Basic Knowledge in a Nutshell

I agree with the reviewer who said that he was able to use the book without prior knowledge of physics or highway design. The book is one of the smallest text books i've had and probably the simplest. I honestly don't know much about the scope of highway design, but it is hard to believe that this book encompasses all of it, even on a basic level. Used the book for a class I was required to take. The information is broken down into manageable and separate topics better than in most books (maybe it has to do more with the subject than the book). The examples were clear and easy to follow. To say that I have "learned" something new would be an exaggeration. Do I now understand the "principles of highway engineering and traffic analysis"? Yes. The book is a collection of formulas with clear explanations on how to use them. Some of the information was interesting just as pure facts (for example seeing how lane widths, shoulder widths, % no passing zones, and some other factors impact the speed that people feel "comfortable" traveling at). A capable reader can get through this book, understand everything in its entirety (I mean not there won't be a single thing you're not 100% sure about from cover to cover), and be able to solve any of the questions in it after about 30 hours of pure studying. This is also one of those books that you can open to a random question without reading anything, and be able to solve it in 10-20 minutes max. Honestly this whole semester should have been condensed to about 3-4 weeks in a more encompassing class. I got a 96 and 100 on the two exams (and a 95-100 on the final that I just took) that were based on this book, and Im a B/B- CE student.

Many cities and counties in the United States and in other countries use this or the international version as a reference text. Professor Mannering is known as one of the most authoritative and knowledgeable individuals in this field.

His manual is referenced from American Government web pages and engineering studies.
The text of this book is both comprehensive and based upon proven engineering principles.

This publication reflects a collaboration by members and staff of the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter. Glenn Pascall acted to lead this collaboration by selecting photographs from his own extensive collection and selecting appropriate excerpts from the writings of John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club. Glenn sought advice from John Muir biographers and scholars to match the best of Muir's writings with each photograph. 2015 has been tagged as the "Year of Muir" by the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter in order to commorate the 100 years that John Muir has inspired the modern environmental and outdoor adventure movements since his life's walk through nature's wonders ended in Los Angeles on Christmas Eve, 1914. Through outdoor activities, conservation action, and political advocacy, the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club engages its members, the public, and local, state, and national policy makers in environmental issues that affect Los Angeles and Orange Counties while exploring, enjoying and protecting the planet. Net proceeds of the book's sales will be used by the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter to support its popular outdoor outings program, effective citizen-based advocacy and lobbying efforts.
