Mixing autobiographical reminiscence, analysis and oral testimony, he interviews Peace Corps members as well as volunteers in hospitals, schools, prisons and nursing homes. Coles finds that volunteer work can have a transformative influence on those who heed the "call of service," even though they frequently experience doubts, misgivings, depression and even a sense of futility and despair. Coles is the prolific and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of such works as The Spiritual Life of Children ( LJ 11/1/90). Here he examines idealism, the drive that leads people to be of service to others. This service takes a variety of forms, from the formal (e.g., the Peace Corps) to simple volunteer work in hospitals, schools, and the like. Coles makes the subject interesting by letting the people who serve talk about their work. These doers, including Coles himself, tell of the satisfactions and the hazards of service. Let it be known that idealism or service is not a one-way street, Coles maintains. Those who give are as much receivers and learners. This engaging and inspiring book is highly recommended. An exceptional blend of observation and reflection, literary report and personal revelation, that once again finds Coles (Psychiatry and Medical Humanities/Harvard; Anna Freud, 1992; etc.) exploring important social concepts--community service and the sources of altruism--with the tenacious moral energy that has characterized his writings for 30 years. From the first, Coles clearly cherished his encounters with people whose conduct claimed his imagination: In book after book, he presented them with dignity and respect. Here, he recalls the six-year-old integrating a southern school who sees ahead not trouble but opportunity; admires the white teacher who introduces Tillie Olsen's short story ``O Yes'' to a class of black middle- schoolers; learns from the Bowery bum who values not only the daily meal at his shelter but also the staff's acceptance of his angry moods; and understands the older tax lawyer who maintains that ``there's still a little of 1964 in me.'' Coles contends that-- while motives vary and overlap and stresses frequently wear people down--the satisfactions of service are plentiful and sustaining, conferring importance on small interactions and providing affirmation to those involved (often in place of, say, apparent social change). In his usual meandering way, he examines not only what those who serve mean to us and what their actions mean to them--most of his subjects emphatically resist the ``idealist'' designation--but also his own part in the equation (as volunteer and witness) and his enduring sources of inspiration: the examples of his own parents; of novelists whose ideas he finds edifying; and of mentors familiar from earlier works. Early on in his career, Coles abandoned the jargon of psychoanalysis and staked out his own territory--and a grateful audience. Reawakening idealism

Some books make you feel good, some books make you feel rotten. This book reawakened my idealism and my interest in doing good in the world. Coles describes the elements of volunteering and how we choose the work in which we become engaged. He also describes how we become disillusioned - sometimes by ignoring the significance of the work that goes on among the volunteers, sometimes by hoping too much and knowing too little, sometimes by not looking at ourselves. But he also offers pictures out of his own life and experience, sharing personal reflections and insights. Coles describes concrete situations in many different kinds of volunteer activities, reporting carefully and without a lot of unnecessary analysis, what gets said, how people look, and when volunteer gestures lead or don't lead to success. His respect for the people he meets is inspiring, as is his openness for learning and reassessing his own value system. Not least important is that Colses is both a good writer and a gifted story teller.

The most insightful and thought provoking book of its field

Volunteerism has been my life. I am now in charge of community volunteers and students involved in service learning. I thought I had a pretty good grasp of the subject until I read this book. Many of my ideas where exploded and new, wonderful ideas and insights took their place.The book discusses problems in communicating with those we are tryig to help. It gives a wonderful discussion of the real meaning of mentoring, and who should really call themselves mentors. It is open and clear about the various reasons we all volunteer. It does not tell you how to run an agency or how to do your work. It simply open new doors that might make you a person who better serves the community. I feel everyone in the fields of volunteerism and community service should read this fabulous book.

Reading this book is time well spent

This book is fantastic. Coles spent a large portion of his life living amongst, interviewing, studying, and writing about volunteer community servants and the people for whom they work. The first 3/4 or so of this book recounts some of his favorite stories from that portion of his life. It does a fine job of doing so - these stories are the kind of thing you can't put down. The last 1/4 or so of the book tries to draw morals and conclusions from the stories. This part of the book is interesting too, and well written, but not quite as good as the first part of the book. For one thing, Coles tries to draw large-scale conclusions from non-randomly picked anecdotal cases. But his conclusions are still very interesting, and the book as a whole is really astonishingly good.

Disappointing, not the usual quality

I am a big Rad fan and have all of her novels so I purchased her latest ebook from BSB as soon as it became available. Unfortunately I have been disappointed with Radclyffe's last two books. The storyline seems rushed and the characters are not developed nearly as well as in her earlier novels. It almost seems as though someone else is writing these latest books. My other biggest complaint is that the novel is much too short. It seems that her earlier books were much longer, providing more time to properly build the storyline. Don't get me wrong - I remain a Rad fan and will continue to purchase her books. This is the first time I have rated one of her books at anything less than a 5 so I cannot avoid being disappointed.

Disappointed-to much jumping around

I have always been a fan of this author and have most of her books, but this one just wasn't up to her usual standards. Agree with the other reviews in characters were just not developed well as in the past, and all of it rushed. I really did not like bringing in the Justice series with this one, I felt like she was trying to introduce that series just to get readers to buy those books (really it made me think of a marketing ploy). If anything it left me disappointed in the Justice series because of the lack of story line behind those rich characters and relationships, and I love the Justice series. I don't know, just seems like this book was thrown out there to keep up with both series and it did not do justice (no pun intended) for either. It was disappointing already we had to wait years between books for some of the series this author writes (4 in the case of the Justice series), I hope this is not the future direction, to start smashing the individual series together just to keep them up to date. If that is the case I hope the author just brings each series to a final conclusion and call it good for the sake of the readers like myself who enjoy all of the series this author has written. Sorry, I have always given high marks for Radclyffe I just couldn't this time but I will still keep looking for her books (another shameless plug if the author reads these reviews, how about some current Honor series).

Sheltering Dunes -- Disappointing

I agree with the other reviewers that this book was a disappointment. Usually Radclyffe does a great job of developing characters and making you connect with them. Unfortunately she did not do that in this book. I hope she takes more time with her next book to develop both the story and the characters. Churning out books only to promote sales figures is disappointing to those of us who support lesbian romance authors.

Money Origami Kit

The packaging of this book is beautifully designed with a box, some sample money to play with, written instructions and how-to movies of all the folds. I always find a video of origami a thousand times easier to follow than written instructions. So that was appreciated here and well worth the price.

I bought The Money Origami Kit as a gift for someone who knows nothing about origami but says he wants to know how to make money folds. I thought this a perfect way to introduce him to origami where he can learn some of the easier diagrams and at the same time create something that has special meaning for him.

Michael LaFosse's Origami Money Kid is a wonderful gift for anyone including yourself.

Best book/DVD for beginners

I've purchased three books on Origami, and this is by far the best, thanks to the included DVD which shows you exactly how to make the folds and is very well done. The other books I bought are confusing and not all that helpful, however I must admit with the Money Origami DVD, it helps to make the other books a bit more useful. I strongley recommend this package over all others that I've seen; at least for a beginner. Hope this helps!

Hot story....wish it was longer!

I'm honored to receive the ARS of this book by D.S and known her work for a first time. Now I'm a big fan of her work!

Alice (without the rabbit hole) is the only single at the company, now that all of her friends got married and become mommies. In her thirties, she dumped her four year relationship boyfriend because she couldn't handle their perfect, simple routine anymore. She needed adverture, she needed something to blast her desires, physically and mentally.

When Alice's friend arrange a night out at a brand new club with all mommies, she wanted to call out but she couldn't deny them for ever, nor to not have fun anymore. And after that night, she couldn't deny her desires either; and the Dark Alley will be the perfect path to complete these desires. No strings attached!

A very well-written short dark story, page turner I must say, made me not want to stop reading it. The story is interesting, like eyes wide closed movie, but with hotter and captivating scenes. I believe that the story isn't a love story but something else, something that intent to make us fell the lust and to be wanted and desirable and kinky. Be in the world of fantasies with a stranger in a Dark Alley!

I totally enjoy reading it, at the late hours of night, and it was so easy to be in her shoe because it was written every detail, is possible be, about the sex scenes and her feelings about them! So hot stuff! I absolutely recomment it!

Honest Review

This is the first of a series by D.S. Wrights. It's a rather short novella, but it holds a lot of promise of things to come.

Imagine a secret club where you can have safe anonymous sex with complete strangers in a dark alley. Would you join such a club? Well, Alice has just received a mysterious invitation to the Dark Alley club.

Alice is recently single, and a bit jaded about men. She has decided that she does not need a regular relationship, but she still has normal urges, and her BOB is not really doing the trick anymore.

Taking a chance she decides to see what this mysterious club is all about. She does not end up regretting it, but is she getting in too deep with something she may not fully understand? I guess we'll have to wait for the next installment to find out.

This is a quick easy read, but well worth it if you are looking for an erotic fantasy story, but not if you are looking for a romance. Although there is a tease that something more may happen later on.

I was intrigued by the premise and see a lot of potential in it. I'm looking forward to seeing where the author takes the story. I liked Alice and want her to be happy, and so far she seems quite happy.

I would encourage you to kick off your shoes and just lean back and enjoy the ride as you travel down the rabbit hole with Alice. Who knows what you may find along the way?

I need more and I need it now

I received an ARC for an honest review.
I can say that this is a story I have been waiting to come out, and I was not disappointed. [author:D S Wrights|8313425] has done it again. I have not read any of her books that I haven't loved.

So this story opens a woman up to the possibility of getting what she wants with out the worry of following the pack and becoming the good wife and mother that is expected. Alice is our main character and she is out with friends when she is given an invite to a club know as dark alley. There is no real clue who has invited her or what might happen oh but she and everyone that reads this knows what they hope it is. This is not a story of a young dumb girl that takes risks just for the heck of it. Alice is a smart women that even though there is risk in what she is doing she had the sense to take steps to protect herself.

Although this was a very quick read there was some of everything you could hope for in a novella. We went from dread to fun to holy cow to what the heck I need more and I sure as h*** need to know who the stranger in the alley is. So to say that I need the next installment like yesterday is an understatement. I hope the helps someone that is undecided on this book but just remember this is my opinion and I loved it.

Addison's disease is very complex. If you do have it, I would encourage you to do as much helpful research as possible, but only to fill your mind with healing and not with worry. This book is a great packet of information full of all the important things you need to know about Addison's. Always stay strong, have faith in your healing, and try meditation like the author suggests (especially guided meditation, in my opinion, if you are new). Be open to positive change and never give up. God is with all.

This short book (25 pages) is worth the price. Most of the information was basic and can be found online but not conveniently in one location. This is the perfect beginner book for sharing with the newly diagnosed or friends and family of those with Addison's. However, it is very basic. I did discover some new information but need to find another reference to expand my understanding of it.

Good book, bad web version

The book is greatest in the field of pathology. Chapters were written by different prestigious writers but still can maintain a consistent style. Even the pictures are consistently good. Tables were well organized. Differential diagnosis were discussed.

It should be a 5 stars book.

But the web version by inkling is difficult (if not the most difficult) to use. It surpass amirsys.

The preset is three frames, the left one "table of content", middle "book content", the right side "Notes". I cannot find a way to remove the "notes" frame or the "table of content" frame so that i can make a good use of area of my screen. The font size are big and the legend of figures cannot be fully shown unless you click to enlarged the picture. I cannot (at least not in a intuitive way) to open the picture in the new tab/window. Suppose you are read the middle of a long chapter and click to zoom a picture, after you finish and click "back", it will go back to the beginning to the chapter. So you have the scroll down every time. It is extremely irritating. I contacted inkling, and the staff seems not understanding my problem.

You cannot print anything. Even copy and paste were restricted to a quota (every day or so).

Every right click is useless.

The search function has some flaw too. The search result is classified as "all", "reader", "enhanced". I used once typing "chromophobe", the "all" did not show result from text, but only showed results from legend of picture. I have to click "reader".

I am sure there are other problems.

I am a working pathologist. I use desktop all the time, seldom use the apps.

This amazing book was acquired in perfect condition as soon as it could.Amazon's reliability at it's best.So far I haven't got even the least complaint.Bostwick urologic pathology is the best of it's kind,suitable not only for advanced pathologists but for the new one's too.There are plenty of tables,diagrams,tips and condensed knowledge in this book, making it easy for everyone to understand.Surely a must have.

Alastair Campbell of Airds was Chief Executive of the Clan and was in charge of the Argyll Archives for thirteen years. In 1985 he was appointed Her Majesty's Unicorn Pursuivant of Arms, a member of the Court of Lord Lyon. He is a member of the Scottish Records Society and the Chapter for the Order of St John in Scotland, and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Tartan to the Lord Lyon.
