This anthology, jointly translated by a Japanese scholar and an American poet, is the largest and most comprehensive collection of its kind to appear in English. Their collaboration has rendered translations both precise and sublime, and their selection, which span 1,500 years, from the early T’ang dynasty to the present day, includes many poems that have never before been translated into English. Stryk and Ikemoto offer us Zen poetry in all its diversity: Chinese poems of enlightenment and death, poems of the Japanese masters, many haiku — the quintessential Zen art — and an impressive selection of poems by Shinkichi Takahashi, Japan’s greatest contemporary Zen poet. With Zen Poetry, Lucien Stryk and Takashi Ikemoto have graced us with a compellingly beautiful collection, which in their translations is pure literary pleasure, illuminating the world vision to which these poems give permanent expression.

If you loved Lucien Stryk's 'Penguin Book of Zen Poetry' then you'll definately love this book, because they are the exact same book! Don't make the same mistake I did, thinking it was a new book, its not, just the old book renamed and packaged as new. When I read reviews about this book elsewhere, its said this was Stryk's latest book on Zen poetry, his best poetry book on Zen poems to date. I agree though, it is his best, again!

Now and Zen
By Mcbruce56
Poetry is a delicate dance between reality and eternity
This is best experienced in Zen poetry, where the present is eternal and the eternal is ever present.
This book is graced by a generous portion of the modern Japanese poet Shinkishi Takahachi, whose works are based in reality of sparrows and trains and a woman' s thigh, but who notes that these things exist in time for a billion years.
Recommended, especially for the section by Takahashi.

An excellent collection of Asian poetry for anyone into this poetic form.
By Joseph J. Truncale
It has been said by that grand master of prose, William Shakespeare that “brevity is the soul of wit.” This is probably why the Asian poetry forms such as “Haiku” have become so popular ever the years. I love all kinds of poetry, with the exception of the long, drawn out, never ending and boring modern free verse form which seems so popular with pseudo-intellectuals today. My favorite poetry form is Japanese Haiku, but I do love all types of Asian poetry.

I purchased this volume (Zen Poetry: Let the spring breeze enter translated and edited by Lucien Stryk and Takashi Ikemoto) at a bargain price on Amazon. I have read numerous books on Asian poetry over the years but I was pleasantly surprised to find many of the poems in this collection were new to me. This soft cover book is organized into four parts and an afterword. Do not pass up the preface, introduction and a note on the translation in the first part of this book. It explains in detail what is meant by the term “Zen Poetry” and other issues.
Part one covers Chinese poems of enlightenment and death. Part two has poems of the Japanese Zen masters. Part three deals with Japanese Haiku. Part four has poetry by Shinkichi Takahashi, a contemporary Japanese master. The afterword is about the death of a Zen Poet, Shinkichi Takahashi.

If you are into the relationship between Asian poetry and Zen this book is for you. I found the material thoughtful and enlightening.

Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Haiku Moments: How to read, write and enjoy haiku)

Good information, but...
By E. Spencer Garrett IV
I am torn between three and four stars for this book but Amazon won't give me a 3.5 option. I have taught at the university level for the past five years and certainly most students can benefit from what is in this book. I want to encourage students to buy (and read) this book. The mythbusting that the authors engage in is certainly worth the price of the book. You can pay now with a little cash or pay later with a low grade to find out the truth about grading. Almost every chapter has good information. I especially liked Chapters 2, 4, 5, and 9.

I also enjoyed how they disparage B's as grades -- what does a B prove to anyone? An A indicates excellence in a course and a C indicates trouble but a B is essentially worthless as a predictor or indicator of anything. As the authors say, not even professors get excited about B's.

However, I do have some complaints.

First, and most important to students is that the authors treat grading opportunities as singular events. This prevents students from treating grades strategically. My advice to students about achieving the best grades possible is for them to strive to earn an A on the first exam of each course they take. Because the material on the first exam is usually much easier than on the Final Exam, holding a grade up is easier than pulling one up. The authors touch on the lack of time to study properly for all of the Finals at the end of the term but don't really offer a solution to the time crunch. By learning early in the semester where they stand in each course, students can allot their time better. An early A enables them to focus their efforts on the courses that they have a shot at pulling up or on those that they can hold -- particularly when they know they gave the first test their best shot. Why spend your limited time on writing a paper or studying for an exam for a course where you have a low B when that time would be better spent pulling up a C or holding an A?

I also do not like how the authors treat a university as a whole rather than as separate parts. They teach at much larger schools than I have (I have never had a Teaching Assistant grade anything for me) so they should know better. For instance, in their discussion of grade inflation they talk about universities as a whole when they must know that within each university are colleges or departments where there can be a large disparity in grading. At my previous school, over 50% of the grades in one department/college were A's while in mine the number was closer to 20%. In fact if I awarded over 60% A's and B's I would receive a nastygram from my boss asking how over half of my students could be Above Average! Students should not assume that good grades are inevitable if they just pick the right university. The same disparity is true of different departments' use of TA's as instructors/lecturers rather than full-time faculty (particularly at the undergraduate level). It may take a little more research to discover the information but students may rest assured that potential employers have done THEIR homework!

My other complaints are more from a faculty standpoint. First the authors give the most superficial explanation of curving grades possible. They take the most extreme examples they have heard of and declare them representative of the thinking of all professors who do curve exams. For the record, I curve exams in case I ask an exam question in an awkward or confusing way or if I failed to teach a point as thoroughly as I perhaps did a previous semester (when, as the authors point out in a different discussion, I may have created the exam question). Why should students be penalized for MY errors?

My last complaint about the book is that it makes grades the end all and be all of a college career. Perhaps that is inevitable considering the topic of this book. I know that the authors don't believe that because they do encourage some behavior that is contrary to maximizing your grades. I just wish they had encouraged students to be more adventurous in the choosing of classes. By declaring grades to be "the currency of college" they discourage students from broadening their horizons. Most professors have seen Straight A students who they know to be ill-prepared for the big wide world because they stuck to a narrowly tailored academic regimen of courses they would do well in. You can get away with this in college. Unfortunately, this is usually self-defeating in life because most employers and citizens have higher expectations of people with college diplomas than just a trade school mentality.

In conclusion, I encourage students to buy this book despite my complaints here. Certainly in my own life I have used material from what I thought at the time were "throw-away" courses or from professors who were tough graders. I doubt that I am alone in this experience. Pursuing good grades is an important part of the college experience, but by no means is it the only part. This book will help students to achieve better grades and that is the reason they should buy it and read it.

Part 3: The Exam--13 Best Ideas for A+ Test-Preparation; Acing Exams by Adjusting Your Attitudes; and The Hidden Value in Going Over Your Test.

GREAT, CONCISE ADVICE FROM INSIDERS
By Chi-Town Flash
Why didn't anybody think of this before? There are dozens of guides on how to get into college, but the publishing world has left millions marooned there once they get in. And it can be quite bewildering. Finally, these two extremely well informed and clear-headed professors have demystified the art of staying in college and doing well there. Once, such advice was available only to a lucky and privileged few with personal or family ties to faculty members. Too many bright and capable students figure out how to do well over four years--they only learn the ropes by the time it's too late. Their overall college record suffers unnecessarily because nobody bothers to tell them what this book finally makes clear is so simple and straightforward. In particular, this book's advice on writing papers will give its readers a huge advantage, and get them on track to success in college right from the start. The authors know all the tricks of the trade and explain them clearly without any intimidating jargon or preaching. They want you to do well and lay out the path toward doing well step by step. You could not spend your money more wisely at the start of your college career than on this book--I only wish it had been available earlier. I have been teaching college at a major state university for l4 years--I will recommend this book to my students, which will save them-- and me--a lot of time and unnecessary grief.

The Samurai Diet: The Science & Strategy of Winning the Fat Loss War, by Nate Miyaki

Can you achieve outstanding fat loss and physique enhancement results while simultaneously improving overall health and wellness?

Is there a sustainable approach that will allow you to maintain a year-round six-pack, without compromising your health, sanity, or ability to function in the real world?

Is there a functional plan that will allow a busy, working professional to look more like a fitness model and less like the average Y2K American, without having to throw away their career goals, live like a professional athlete, or have their life revolve around food?

The answer is yes. Will it be magic-pill/infomercial easy? No, but with the right strategies and practical application, it is possible.

Many bodybuilders and fat loss enthusiasts will follow extreme measures to attain a ripped physique -- unknowingly disrupting normal metabolic and hormonal functioning, and ultimately compromising long-term health.

At the same time, there are many Paleo/Low Carb eaters that seek to improve biomarkers of health, but lose out on the physique enhancing benefits of scientifically researched, modern sports nutrition principles. Despite consistent exercise and healthy eating patterns, they are unable to attain the lean, sculpted physique they desire.

The truth is that with a more informed approach, you don't have to sacrifice one goal to achieve the other.

The Samurai Diet makes use of Bruce Lee's philosophy: research your own experience, absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is essentially your own.

The Samurai Diet pulls the best principles from Paleo Nutrition, Sports Nutrition, Bodybuilding & Fitness Nutrition, the Traditional Japanese Diet, Intermittent Fasting approaches, and research from university labs and peer-reviewed research journals across the globe.

The Samurai Diet combines evolutionary theory, scientific research, and practical experience (as a natural bodybuilder, fitness model, and physique enhancement coach) to unveil a hybrid plan geared towards simultaneously achieving your two main goals: improving health AND improving appearance.

A Solid Start for a Writer
By A VFF
"The Samurai Diet" title is misleading - this book is much more than an eating plan. It's a well written and comprehensive guide to what's current in fitness nutrition. Miyaki covers the good and bad in paleo to sports nutrition to the latest resurging diet trend, Intermittent Fasting, and does so in an engaging way, sprinkled with quotes from Bruce Lee and samurai related books. He also recommends what foods to avoid and what's ok to have as well as general nutrition advice.

What makes Miyaki different from most fitness writers I've read is he advocates a moderate approach to carb intake vs the current "all carbs are bad for you" trend. The Samurai Diet is based off what he says is a traditional Japanese diet - 3 meals with an emphasis on protein and a staggered split of moderate and light carbs such as sweet potatoes and vegetables, respectively. Giving examples of how low carb and extreme diets, while effective, can also cause issues (lethargy, depression, insomnia, etc.) he argues a moderate approach to carbs is more beneficial since that can help in exercise recovery, building muscle, and in some cases lower body fat faster than following a strictly low carb diet. But he doesn't completely dismiss low carb diets, since he thinks it's a better fit for more sedentary folks given their lower amounts of activity.

Though a relative newcomer to the fitness writing world, Miyaki's been around the block and it shows. Drawing from his time as a trainer/nutritionist and overall fitness lifestyle/education, he quotes numerous published reports and studies to back up his assertions, which is a refreshing change from other authors who write "numerous studies say..." then don't quote any of them. He also has a knack in simplifying concepts, such as an example in "Lesson #1: Exercise Cannot Make Up for a Poor Diet" where he shows how someone who eats ice cream then thinks they're burning those calories by working out harder isn't accomplishing much. He talks about how the ice cream and intense exercise can cause negative effects in the body and it's all easy to understand.

The book is broken up into sections with short chapters where he addresses different nutritional/fitness topics. The chapters run from one to several pages long, so they're a fairly quick read and it's an easy book to put down and pick back up again if you're busy.

If you're looking for this book to be your diet savior, you might be disappointed. While Miyaki does advocate the Samurai Diet for active people and a paleo type lower carb intake for people who are sedentary, he also states what works well for one person may not for someone else and a lot of this can be "learn as you go" as you figure out what your body will or won't tolerate foodwise (which is something I've learned as well from personal experience).

There are some things I'd have liked to have seen:

1. More on supplements: Miyaki says supplements aren't a fast track to a great body vs how one eats and exercises and he's right. He covers staples such as green tea, caffeine, fish oil and Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) but I was disappointed there wasn't additional supplements like magnesium or creatine, which have been used in the fitness world for years with positive feedback.

2. Personal stories from his time as a trainer/nutritionist: I think talking about lessons learned from himself or his former clients (aside from an occasional mention) would make for more relatable examples. The science snippets might be nice from a 'published authorities back up what I say' point of view, but there were times I'd glaze over them.

3. Leeway in substitute foods: In "Book II: Cut Down Your Enemy", Miyaki advocates eliminating different food groups such as dairy. While he's correct in how these groups can hinder one's progress, he doesn't cover what would be good substitutes in some case. The negative examples he uses for dairy are based on cow's milk and doesn't cover other types out there like goat's or almond milk. I discovered I had a sensitivity (bloating, etc.) years ago to regular (cow) milk but have no issues with using goat's or almond milk and I know others who are the same way.

4. Miyaki's columns have shown he has a great, if not offbeat, sense of humor. He might have been advised to keep it straight since this is his first book, but I think some dashes of humor here and there would've added more of a personal touch.

If you're a regular reader of Miyaki's columns, there's nothing here he hasn't written before but he does elaborate quite a bit and I'd still recommend buying the book. I learned some new things and think of it as a handy reference. If you're a beginner to the fitness lifestyle, this would make an excellent starting point and I've told a trainer I know to pass word of this book on to his clients. For $6 (cheaper than most meals) this book is a steal.

It's been working
By Mark S. Schoon
I'm 57, haven't been very active for a couple of years, had gotten very out of shape and a bit overweight (6'1", 210lbs). That was about 6 weeks ago. I've started becoming much more active doing something almost every day. Walking briskly, strength training 3-4 times a week, swimming, some cycling, all of which has helped, but what's made the biggest difference is following the advice in this book. I like that it's well researched, that at the end of the book he's not trying to sell his special supplement or exercise equipment or whatever. In fact he advocates taking it all with some skepticism and doing some experimenting for what works in your own circumstance.

The biggest lesson I've learned is how important food choice is and how that impacts everything that follows. I dropped gluten, dairy, and virtually all processed foods, and have been scaling back on grains. This morning, I was 192, I sleep better and I feel great. Best of all I'm not on a diet, but have discovered a new understanding of how to eat to meet my goals that will carry me through in the long run. It's literally changed my life.

Excellent resource
By BPM
This is a very good book on how 'physique athletes' diet to get very lean, delivered in a what I'd imagine the author would agree is a gimmicky but entertaining manner. The whole samurai angle is, let's be honest, pretty silly. I promise that samurai were not particularly concerned about maintaining a single digit body fat level. It does add a lot of entertainment value to what is very clear, straightforward and effective information. As someone who's been eating Paleo/Primal for many years, but never got super lean, this was exactly the information I needed. Some folks have mentioned that they would like meal plans but it's made clear in the book that you need to figure out your own meal plans- the whole point is your diet is deeply dependent on your current body composition, activity levels and so on. I do disagree with him when he says that food scales are overkill- my little $20 scale really helped me to understand what a serving of 50 grams of protein looks like, for example (more chicken breast than you may think). I don't use it much any more but starting out it was super useful.

I give 4 stars instead of 5 only because probably half of the book is italicized copy and paste text from dozens of studies. I would bet that the vast majority of people reading this book don't need to read 5 pages of a study's result in detail concerning lipid levels and hormone measurements- we just want a 2 or 3 sentence summary of the results, and throw the rest in an appendix for the technically inclined. Other than that it's a great book and highly recommended.

Amazon.com Review
Classify this itsy-bitsy book as a project management guide that isn't a project to read but that distills all the basics for you into a quick thumbnail guide on everything from establishing objectives and keeping to schedules and budgets to providing effective leadership and tackling problems efficiently. Along the way, simple checklists enable you to be fully prepared at every stage, from starting up to closing down, and accessible diagrams and flow charts explore different options for action and provide useful examples. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do you just fine.

It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty li'l books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies book series's talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-size bits and sidebars with Dorling Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective. Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for more in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute and look so smart in a neat little stack or row that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy

Not Bad, Could Be Better
By Josh D. Nankivel
This is not a bad overview for a newbie project manager, but it tries to cover a lot of ground in a small area so essentially each point is only given a paragraph or two. Because of this, not much context is provided or a discussion of various situations that may arise. This is much more like one version of the "what" and not much of the "how".
