I thoroughly enjoyed The Almost Wives Club: Kate, by Nancy Warren. It is a quick, fast paced read that completely took over my world from the very first chapter. The synopsis is a real teaser, yet it is only a small part of what this book is truly about.

Kate Winton-Jones is getting married in three weeks to Ted Carnarvon, a very wealthy guy from a very wealthy family. His parents, along with Kate's mother, will do whatever is necessary to ensure that Kate's baggage up until this point is squeaky clean. Kate believes she is happy and as a result of her pedigree upbringing, never questions any of Ted's activities or exploits. Their relationship eventually goes belly-up after Kate's wedding dress is cursed, she loses her job, meets the love of her life and most importantly, finds her true-self.

I loved Kate and the way Ms. Warren evolved her from a people pleaser into a strong, independent woman. Each discovery Kate makes about her life, whether good or bad, makes her an even wiser person. Kate thought she had everything, a loving and faithful fiance, a job for a non-profit that she liked, and a future filled with babies. On paper she and Ted are perfect for each other, however, womanizer and private investigator Nick Mansfield, helps Kate realize what love truly is all about.

Ms. Warren packs a lot of excitement into this love story and I really liked the way she brought about Kate and Nick's relationship. I don't think I will ever forget how Kate felt when she was betrayed by the people who were supposed to care about her most. Overall, this is well-written and interesting romance that twists and turns in all the right places. I am truly looking forward to reading the second book in the series, Second Hand Bride, when it is published next month.

If you don't care about a character's questionable morals.

I thought the premise was pretty cute, but the character development left something to be desired.

I found it a little unbelievable that she would just jump into bed with Nick after what happened. He is hired to test her fidelity and she just decides that "Hey that's okay. He's not really a bad guy with questionable morals. Let's get naked together." The story was cute but that just ruined it a little bit for me.

Kate always wanted to please everyone and somewhere in all that pleasing others, she lost herself. One short conversation with a stranger has her rethinking everything. Especially what her life is going to be like being married to Ted...and his family.

Nick Mansfield cannot get the beautiful...engaged...woman out of his mind. There was something about her that stands out more than any other woman he has ever known. And he has known plenty of women. If only she weren't engaged.

Another story that pulls the reader in and doesn't let go. I loved watching Kate change from who others wanted her to be, to who she really was. Loved Nick as well. I'm looking forward to more books in this series.

Hydraulic practitioners point of view

The book is a real feast for those engineers who want to understand the nuts and bolts of the hydraulic modelling. Importanly it provides a very nice balance between the underlaying theory of the numerical analysis, tuned to assist in solution of hydraulic problems. While unfortunattely to many engineers tend only to ask ".. give me the model to solve the problem .." this book is for those who aim to be masters in their trade and fully undertstand the computational aspects in hydraulics. The authors obvious experience in lecturing (and patience in building the story) comes accross as all the complex derivations are logical and easy to follow. The fact that the book has the accompanied software, illustrated with many excellent examples, makes the reading even more exciting because it gives the reader the confidence of undertaking complex calculations. While the software is an excellent tool for the hydraulic analysis its structure and logic used to develop its building blocks is a masterpiece. Author should be commended to his dedication and skill to convey the complex story in a way that excites others to learn more and excell in their own craft.

Transformational!

By page three I was in tears. This book hit an unexpected cord. I couldn't put Sacred Space down until I read the last word. It was then I moved through my home with a new pair of eyes. Creative suggestions that lead to profound results

Jill Angelo's Sacred Space takes you on a sensory journey through the home that your inner self has always longed to create, while giving you all the direction you need to make those visions reality. Jill emphasizes that making your space sacred isn't about spending a lot of money. It's about self-discovery and deliberate intention--a combination that virtually guarantees you will fall in love with your own creation. Jill's suggestions are truly engaging and her perspective is unique. The book is definitely a fun and thoughtful read. One particularly brilliant touch is that every chapter ends with a list of "Things You Can Do Today," which invites you to actually do something (that's relatively simple), not just read about doing something. In short, this book makes the goal of creating a sacred space not only attractive but also absolutely attainable.

Subtle, Powerful Sacred Energies

What I love about Jill's book is that she mingles the sacred with the physical. With each perspective on how we relate to our homes, to our lives, we are guided into a deeper contemplative space. I browsed through this book upon first receiving it several months ago, reading the highlights. I'm now pacing myself through each chapter, taking time to allow the energies to ruminate and make their way into my internal awareness. As I do, I feel those vibrations moving out into my home and environment. The shifts are subtle, but potent. I'll be keeping this as one of those books I can pick up at any moment, open to a page and feel something inspired.

Worth having.

If you've never done Wing Chun before & would like to get a dummy & learn the dummy form, this book is probably a waste of your time. The first half of it is mostly just still-frames taken from a film of Ip Man doing his dummy form. This film was never intended for people to "teach themselves". Rather, the film was taken as a reference for people who've already had training in Wing Chun. The film was also made so that students could tell whether or not a given instructor was really teaching Ip Man's Wing Chun, so they could discern real Wing Chun instructors apart from the liars, fakes, and the blatantly unqualified. So don't get this book with the intention of using it to teach yourself the Wing Chun dummy set from the ground up - Wing Chun is a lot like law: "The man who represents himself has a fool for a client", and "The man who trains himself kung fu has a fool for a sifu". For instance, you might be able to learn the sequence of positions, but this book will leave you clueless as to how to move from one position to the next. It tells you nothing about how fast you should & shouldn't move, or how to deliver force, for example.

That being said, the 2nd half of the book is examples of application of each movement in the dummy set. If you already train in WC, there's a good chance you'll see one or two things in this section that'll surprise you. The rest you'll probably already know, but reinforcement never hurt anyone.

So if you already do Wing Chun, this book is a must-have, & completely lives up to its intended purpose. Use it as a handy reference while learning the form. And check the form in this book against what you're being taught at your school - if there's a few minor differences, that's no big deal (for instance, I do Ip Ching Wing Chun, & Ching has changed a couple little things - like replacing a tan sau with a lop sau in one of the movements). Little changes here-and-there are no big deal, but if your Ip Man lineage Wing Chun school's dummy set is radically different than this, you can be sure that whatever they're teaching didn't come from Ip Man - they changed it, or never knew it in the first place & made a bunch of stuff up.

Also, if you come from a Wing Chun lineage other than Ip Man, you'll find this book interesting. It's always neat to see how other traditions do things (at least I think it is).

That's about it: Highly recommended for any WC practitioner at any level.

For non-WC practitioners, there's no substitution for real, hands-on instruction, but if you must learn from a book or video there are more useful introductory books & videos out there. For videos, start with Wong Shun Leung's "The Science of In-Fighting". For books, look no further than Wayne Belonoha's "Wing Chun Compendium".

This book contains Master Yip Man's complete 116 move wooden dummy kata. Each of the moves is shown with an excellent picture and clear instructions. This is probably the best way to improve one's infighting techniques. The book is written by the master's son, Master Yip Chun using photographs that his father had originally had taken to leave for his students. An essential book for kung fu students.

Surprisingly good book

I recently switched from Nikon to Canon. I do portraiture and weddings for pay, amateur work for my church and a little family stuff. I made the switch to Canon because it was time to upgrade from my D300 and I liked the Canon 5d III better than the Nikon D800. I am pretty familiar with DLSRs. The 5d is my fourth purchase but I bought the Lowerie Field Guide to the 5d just to make sure I wasn't missing anything. Lowrie did a nice job with her book and she recommended the Corsentino guide for the EX 600-RT flash. I took her advice since I had found the Canon Manual ponderous and I couldn't find anything of value to understand the capability of the ST-E3-RT.

The Corsentino Guide was just what I needed. Straight easy to understand and lots of explanatory pictures. His detail on the ST-E3-RT sold me on getting one which I ordered that day from Amazon.

I am very familiar with the Nikon flash system on and off camera. Corsentino's book takes the Canon system from A to Z which means there was a lot of redundancy from my point of view but his approach and writing style was excellent, enough so that I read the book cover to cover even though it covered things with which I was already very familiar.

Bare Bones But Better Than the Manuals

... and also up to date. "Light", as it were, on theory. Pretty much doesn't stray from the authors hard-one preferences. Not the full-on photographic course you get from the "Speedliters Handbook".

Not what I thought it was going to cover

The book concentrates on limited use of Canon speedlights, and focuses a large part of the book on other additional external lighting set-ups.

I wanted a guide to cover getting the most from bounce lighting - hardly anything on the subject. And how to use the controls on my Cannon 430EX. But it did not cover much at all.

Very disappointed.
