About the Author

Since Richie McCaw's debut in 2001 the All Blacks have won seven Tri Nations titles, completed three successful Grand Slam tours and won the Bledisloe Cup eight times as well as the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He is the All Blacks most capped player of all time and has been named the International Rugby Board (IRB) Player of the Year a record three times.

Great Book From A Great All Black

Richie McCaw, New Zealand's All Blacks rugby captain was described by Heyneke Meyer, the coach of South Africa, one of the All Black's greatest rivals, as "probably the best player who ever played rugby" In most pictures, McCaw's gaze is cheerful but the cover of his autobiography shows the intensity and the hardness he brings to the game.

In The Real McCaw, The Autobiography, the first chapter tells of his foundation and the beginning of Richie McCaw's determination to be a great all black. Goal setting and visualization became a major part of his life. He figured out the preparation he needed to succeed and followed through. His preparation, even today, includes writing instructions to himself in a notebook. They begin with the words "Start again" and end with the letters G.A.B. a reminder that, ever since he was a boy, he aspired to be a Great All Black.

McCaw was in charge of a side that hadn't been beaten for 15 months. In that time he also ended the losses of one World Cup after another for New Zealand when, in October 2011, he captained the All Blacks to victory.

The fact that he played the last three matches with broken bones in his foot provided Paul Ackford (Sunday Telegraph) with the back cover blurb "Better on one leg during the World Cup than most players on two."

The chapters leading up to, and including, the World Cup gave an inside look at a brutal contact sport and the mind of the rugby captain leading the All Blacks.
Subsequent chapters touch on his love of gliding, flying in general, the love for his family and the heartache after the earthquake in Christchurch, his home.

If you're looking for an expose'of his love life you won't get it in this book. This is not a tell all book on the people he knows or the women he's dated. It is a book about a humble man at the top of his sport who has achieved all of his rugby goals. Also, it's about a man who believes in the morality of following rules. He is a G.A.B 24-7. I would recommend this book to anyone, not just to rugby fans.

If you ever need the inspiration to rise up when the going gets tough, this is the book to look to.

Honest and inspiring

This is a great book. It's exciting, honest and sensitive. I really enjoyed reading about all the rugby matches or interviews I'd watched on tv and reading things from a different point of view, say from perhaps the Australian media. I remember watching the All Blacks quarter final against France in 2007 and being shocked and devastated for them but this really illuminates all the plays and thoughts of every minute of the game, which I found really fascinating.

This is obviously for rugby enthusiasts but I really enjoyed it as an autobiographical tale too.Such a passion for life, his family, flying and rugby make Richie not just a G.A.B but seemingly also an incredibly decent and lovely human being. New Zealand are lucky to have him on their team. A great uplifting, inspiring read!

About the Author

Richard N. Longenecker is Ramsey Armitage Professor of New Testament, Wycliffe College, University of Toronto. He receivec the B.A. and M.A. degrees from Wheaton College and Wheaton Graduate School of Theology, respectively, and the Ph.D. from New College, University of Edinburgh. His principal publications include Paul, Apostle of Liberty (1964), The Christology of Early Jewish Christianity (1970), The Ministry and Message of Paul (1971), Biblical Exegesis in the Apostolic Period (1975), “The Acts of the Apostles” in The Expositor’s Bible Commentary (1981), and The New Testament Social Ethics for Today (1984).

Bruce M. Metzger (1914 – 2007) was a biblical scholar, textual critic, and a longtime professor at Princeton Theological Seminary. Metzger is widely considered one of the most influential New Testament scholars of the 20th century. He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2007).

David Allan Hubbard (1928 – 1996), former president and professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, was a recognized biblical scholar. In addition to over 30 books, he has written numerous articles for journals, periodicals, reference works. He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1996).

Glenn W. Barker (d. 1984) was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1984).

Watts (1921 – 2013) was President of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Ruschlikon, Switzerland, and served as Professor of Old Testament at that institution, at Fuller Theological Seminary, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His numerous publications include commentaries on Isaiah (2 volumes), Amos, and Obadiah. He was Old Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 2011).

 

James W. Watts is a professor and chair of the Department of Religion at Syracuse University. His teaching and research interests include biblical studies, especially the Torah/Pentateuch, ritual theories, rhetorical analysis, and comparative scriptures studies. He is a co-founder of the Iconic Books Project. He had served as the associate Old Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2011).

 

Ralph P. Martin (1925-2013) was Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Fuller Theological Seminary and a New Testament Editor for the Word Biblical Commentary series. He earned the BA and MA from the University of Manchester, England, and the PhD from King's College, University of London. He was the author of numerous studies and commentaries on the New Testament, including Worship in the Early Church, the volume on Philippians in The Tyndale New Testament Commentary series. He also wrote 2 Corinthians and James in the WBC series.

Lynn Allan Losie is Associate Professor of New Testament at Azusa Pacific University. A generalist in New Testament studies, Dr. Losie teaches courses in the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, and the Pauline Epistles, as well as in the background areas of Greek, early Judaism, and the greater Hellenistic World. He has published articles on the New Testament and had served as the associate New Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2013). Ordained as a Baptist minister, he has also served in pastoral ministry in Southern California and Oregon.

He is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at San Diego State University, and has extensive academic and industrial experience in researching and developing video compression systems. I thoroughly enjoyed The Almost Wives Club: Kate, by Nancy Warren. It is a quick, fast paced read that completely took over my world from the very first chapter. The synopsis is a real teaser, yet it is only a small part of what this book is truly about.

Kate Winton-Jones is getting married in three weeks to Ted Carnarvon, a very wealthy guy from a very wealthy family. His parents, along with Kate's mother, will do whatever is necessary to ensure that Kate's baggage up until this point is squeaky clean. Kate believes she is happy and as a result of her pedigree upbringing, never questions any of Ted's activities or exploits. Their relationship eventually goes belly-up after Kate's wedding dress is cursed, she loses her job, meets the love of her life and most importantly, finds her true-self.

I loved Kate and the way Ms. Warren evolved her from a people pleaser into a strong, independent woman. Each discovery Kate makes about her life, whether good or bad, makes her an even wiser person. Kate thought she had everything, a loving and faithful fiance, a job for a non-profit that she liked, and a future filled with babies. On paper she and Ted are perfect for each other, however, womanizer and private investigator Nick Mansfield, helps Kate realize what love truly is all about.

Ms. Warren packs a lot of excitement into this love story and I really liked the way she brought about Kate and Nick's relationship. I don't think I will ever forget how Kate felt when she was betrayed by the people who were supposed to care about her most. Overall, this is well-written and interesting romance that twists and turns in all the right places. I am truly looking forward to reading the second book in the series, Second Hand Bride, when it is published next month.

If you don't care about a character's questionable morals.

I thought the premise was pretty cute, but the character development left something to be desired.

I found it a little unbelievable that she would just jump into bed with Nick after what happened. He is hired to test her fidelity and she just decides that "Hey that's okay. He's not really a bad guy with questionable morals. Let's get naked together." The story was cute but that just ruined it a little bit for me.

Kate always wanted to please everyone and somewhere in all that pleasing others, she lost herself. One short conversation with a stranger has her rethinking everything. Especially what her life is going to be like being married to Ted...and his family.

Nick Mansfield cannot get the beautiful...engaged...woman out of his mind. There was something about her that stands out more than any other woman he has ever known. And he has known plenty of women. If only she weren't engaged.

Another story that pulls the reader in and doesn't let go. I loved watching Kate change from who others wanted her to be, to who she really was. Loved Nick as well. I'm looking forward to more books in this series.

Analysis and Modelling of Non-Steady Flow in Pipe and Channel Networks deals with flows in pipes and channel networks from the standpoints of hydraulics and modelling techniques and methods. These engineering problems occur in the course of the design and construction of hydroenergy plants, water-supply and other systems. In this book, the author presents his experience in solving these problems from the early 1970s to the present day. During this period new methods of solving hydraulic problems have evolved, due to the development of computers and numerical methods.

This book is accompanied by a website which hosts the author's software package, Simpip (an abbreviation of simulation of pipe flow) for solving non-steady pipe flow using the finite element method. The program also covers flows in channels. The book presents the numerical core of the SimpipCore program (written in Fortran).

Hydraulic practitioners point of view

The book is a real feast for those engineers who want to understand the nuts and bolts of the hydraulic modelling. Importanly it provides a very nice balance between the underlaying theory of the numerical analysis, tuned to assist in solution of hydraulic problems. While unfortunattely to many engineers tend only to ask ".. give me the model to solve the problem .." this book is for those who aim to be masters in their trade and fully undertstand the computational aspects in hydraulics. The authors obvious experience in lecturing (and patience in building the story) comes accross as all the complex derivations are logical and easy to follow. The fact that the book has the accompanied software, illustrated with many excellent examples, makes the reading even more exciting because it gives the reader the confidence of undertaking complex calculations. While the software is an excellent tool for the hydraulic analysis its structure and logic used to develop its building blocks is a masterpiece. Author should be commended to his dedication and skill to convey the complex story in a way that excites others to learn more and excell in their own craft.
